What "atheism" is not

Dear fundamentalist Christian friends, please take note.

"Atheism" is not:

  • a word which describes everyone you disagree with.
  • a word which is interchangeable with "science".
  • an adequate descriptor for Adolf Hitler (who strongly believed God had a destiny for the German people).
  • a word used to describe anyone who is an unbeliever in the gospel - not all unbelievers are atheists.
  • a word you can apply to someone so you don't have to deal with them as valid human beings and can write them off.

Thank you for your consideration.

  1. Gordon,
I agree entirely with what you say!
Conversely, I believe you could say the same about 'Christian'.
What is, or who are Christians? The parable of the 'wheat and the tares' Matthew 13, teaches, among many other Scriptures, that there are false professors of the Faith. Some think they are a Christian because they go Church at Christmas! It is a term with a broad definition.
There is much in the media reported about 'Christian' behaviour, that quite frankly, makes me cringe. I am not quiet about my faith, and will witness whenever an opportunity arises.
I am not a placard waving 'God hates Fags' type Christian! No, perish the thought! Having said that I wouldn't shirk from telling homosexuals what the Bible says about homosexuality. If they get aerated about my witness, and some do, I just tell them that their controversy is with God, not me. We should ever be gracious toward our fellow human beings. I am ever amazed at how society has changed in the short time I have been on this planet. When I was a kid, you could get locked up for being caught in a homosexual act. Today homosexuals can just about get married in a Church! The pendulum certainly has swung! Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want to go back to those dark days when blackmail etc was commonly used against homosexuals.
As you know, not all homosexuals are militant, some just wouldn't want to stay in a Christian B&B. Others are looking for a confrontation. Likewise I wouldn't take my family into a Gay establishment for a meal, or drink out. I think some Christians are too petty about insisting on having a silver cross hanging around their necks in the workplace. We are called to be peacemakers! If I were asked to remove or cover it, I would do so, for the sake of keeping the peace; it is NOT a denial of the Faith! This jewellery has no power, the power is in the atonement itself.
Fundamentalism is a term which as far as I understand it arose from growing liberalism in the Church over a 100 plus year ago, most particularly in America.
Am I a Fundamentalist? I don't know? I believe in the Creation account, I certainly believe evolution is not science.
According to the dictionary that I have at hand, the definition of Fundamentalism is:
A form of Protestant Christianity which upholds belief in the strict and literal interpretation of the Bible.
Lets take Psalm 91.4, for example;' He will cover thee with his feathers . And under his wings shalt thou take trust.'
Do I think God is a bird? No! This is symbolic language! So from this angle I am NOT a Fundamentalist!!
I take the Abiding Word of God seriously. These labels are a massive turn off for some!
Some might call me a Reformed, Fundamentalist,Pre-Millennial,Post Tribulational, Calvinist believer!
